Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment Comparison and Reverse Osmosis Reviews

The vast majority of reverse osmosis (RO) reviews are positive, and in some cases they are downright glowing about the ability of these units to clean up brackish well water or water with very high iron or sulfate content. And I would also praise RO systems' ability to clean up such water. But most of us don't have brackish water that needs this very expensive and cumbersome technology. In this article let's take a look at a reverse osmosis water treatment comparison with other water filter technologies options that are available.

In the area I live in a lot of folks have well water with high iron or sulfate content. In some cases either the taste or smell makes it almost impossible to drink. But, when the water is cleaned up with an RO system they think it tastes great and, compared to what they have been drinking, it is. But, visitors often find the water very "flat" tasting.

INVERSE OSMOSIS

This "flat" taste is a small thing, but it is a symptom of something larger. The flatness comes from the fact that the RO process removes ALL the minerals from the water. We need trace minerals such as calcium and potassium to maintain good health. Also, this mineral removal produces slightly acidic water and such water will try to reach a neutral pH by leaching calcium from bones or teeth. If you use a RO system, you may want to consider adding mineral supplements to your diet.

Not to belabor the point, but health officials have proven that when body fluids become more acid than alkaline there is an increased production of free radicals, thus increasing the risk of cancer.

RO systems filter by forcing water through a semi-permeable membrane. Any molecules larger than water molecules are separated out and removed. The amount of force required may necessitate an auxiliary pump.

With adequate pressure, however achieved, much of the water still will not pass through the membrane and, with many systems, is simply a costly waste byproduct.

Chlorine is usually used to kill the living bugs in our well water or our city water and, since chlorine molecules are smaller than water's they will not be filtered out. Neither will any of the thousands of synthetic organic chemicals that trouble our water supplies today. To remove these items, RO systems must be used in conjunction with some sort of carbon filtration.

All water filtration systems impede water flow to some extent, but RO systems are notoriously slow. Large, whole house systems require an additional storage tank in order to provide adequate water for laundry or bathing.

These units are rather bulky, comparatively, and with extra pumps, storage tanks, etc., they generally will require the assistance of a plumber to install. They are also prone to maintenance issues and higher operating costs.

If your drinking water comes from a water utility company, or from a chlorinated well, not plagued with brackish water, I would recommend you look at a selective filtration system. It's what I use and I don't think you can beat the guaranteed quality of the water for the price.

These systems filter in stages, using granulated carbon, a carbon and multi-media block with a sub-micron filter, along with ion exchange. This is state-of-the-art water filtration technology. In simple English, the bad water flows into the filter system from one end, using normal water pressure, all the bad stuff is removed, and the good, safe water, complete with the healthy minerals flows out the other end.

No pumps, no storage tanks, no need for mineral supplements, and the filtered water is clean and healthy.

Bottom line though, any filter system is better than using your body as a filter. If you don't think so, read my article entitled, "Tap Water Facts-Chlorine in Drinking Water Makes Chickens Cry "Foul""

Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment Comparison - Make No Mistake

Are you planning to buy a water purification system for your home? Looking for some facts revealing reverse osmosis water treatment comparison with other purifiers? Your quest ends here.

Most of the reverse osmosis reviews will only mention about the advantages that such a water treatment system has to offer. The other side of these systems is seldom talked about. This article will primarily focus on those less talked about facts about RO based systems. It will also present a reverse osmosis water treatment comparison analysis.

INVERSE OSMOSIS

Knowing the fact that the water supplied to our homes is highly impure and is contaminated with various pollutants like pesticides, cysts, chlorine, lead, metal traces etc., I assume you understand the need to purify it. After all clean drinking water is an essential requirement of our body.

The RO based water purifiers are one of the popular choices. All thanks to the reverse osmosis reviews which mention only half of the story. If you do a fair reverse osmosis water treatment comparison, you will find the following truth:-

- An RO based water purifier is very effective against organic and chemical contaminants. But as compared to the other multi stage water purifiers, it is not able to filter chlorine and pharmaceutical drugs. Unlike RO systems, a multi stage water purifier uses carbon filtration and sub micron filtration techniques which can efficiently filter out virtually all impurities from the water.

- An RO based water system de-mineralizes the water. As opposed to the multi-stage water purifiers which do not tamper the natural form of the water, the RO based filters strip off the minerals from water. These minerals like sodium, calcium, magnesium, iodine etc are present in the natural water. They are good for our health and consuming water lacking in these minerals can lead to deficiencies and other health problems.

- An RO based water system wastes a lot of water. The ratio of the filtered water to the water actually consumed for this filtration process is roughly 1:3. This implies 3 gallons of water will be wasted to produce 1 gallon of filtered water. In contrast to this, multi-stage water purifiers do not waste water. They are economical to maintain too.

- In contrast to the multi stage water purifiers which are customizable and can be easily installed over the counter or under the counter; the RO based units are not easily configurable. They need an additional outlet pipe and need explicit plumbing to provide this outlet near the drainage.

- The cost of the RO based units is unreasonably high as compared to the other multi stage water purifier units.

Now that we have discussed the less talked about side of the RO based units; this completes the reverse osmosis water treatment comparison with other multi-stage purifiers.

Make no mistake about it. Do not simply believe reverse osmosis reviews - do a comparison, find out the truth and make the right choice.

Reverse Osmosis Water Units - A Comparison

There are so many drawbacks to reverse osmosis water units; it's hard to decide where to begin. Let's start with installation and maintenance.

osmosis membrane

As with other purification devices, a variety of reverse osmosis systems are available. Some are designed to filter the water for the whole house. Others are strictly for kitchen use.

OSMOSIS

The ones for the kitchen require a separate faucet and drain for wastewater. Installation requires the help of a plumber for any of the reverse osmosis systems. There are kitchen counter purifiers that do not include an RO step. Those can be installed by the homeowner.

Reverse osmosis water units for the whole house require electricity. If an outlet is unavailable, you'll have to call an electrician, as well as a plumber.

Maintenance depends on the number of steps that are including in the system and the amount of water used in the home. There is no way to get an accurate estimate of how much you will spend on maintenance, but it will be costly and time consuming.

The best reverse osmosis systems for the kitchen includes three separate cartridges, each having a different lifespan. One cartridge must be changed every six months. Replacement of the other cartridges depends, again, on usage.

Figuring out when to replace them is another problem. Unless you measure the number of gallons that your family uses in the kitchen every day and keep track of that number throughout the year, there is no way to be accurate. Your protection is lost if you don't replace them on time.

The cartridges must be flushed regularly to remove build up. This is a maintenance step that is not required by other purification devices.

The cost of reverse osmosis water units that will address all of the contaminants that most of us are faced with is 9.99. That's just for a system to sit under your kitchen sink. You can get a purification device that is just as effective for about 5.

Reverse osmosis systems remove all of the minerals that are naturally present in surface and groundwater. Selective purification devices do not remove minerals, only hazardous contaminants.

Reverse osmosis water units increase water usage because of wastewater created or flushing requirements. Selective purifiers create no wastewater and only increase water usage because you want to drink more.

The taste of water that is cleaned through reverse osmosis systems is flat and unpleasant. The taste of purifiers that include an ion exchange step is like fresh mountain spring-water.

Let's see, it seems as though I have forgotten something. Oh, yes. Flushing and wastewater add to the pollution that already exists in our environment. It eventually ends up back in a stream or river, along with the contaminants that were removed by the system.

Multi-stage selective filtration traps all of the contaminants inside a disposable cartridge. You never have to touch them and they don't become additional environmental pollutants. So, make the "green" choice and skip reverse osmosis water units. That's my advice.

Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment Comparison GUIDE

If you do your own reverse osmosis water treatment comparison, you are likely to see why most people choose another option. Consumer's reverse osmosis reviews are sometimes positive, but mostly, there are lots of complaints.

osmosis water system

Taste

OSMOSIS

The first complaint you see in consumer reverse osmosis reviews is that the water tastes stale. The second is often that you can still taste chlorine. It seems that someone might want to conduct a "taste test" reverse osmosis water treatment comparison.

The reason for the stale taste is that RO removes all traces of the minerals. We need minerals to maintain good hydration. They are sometimes referred to as electrolytes. The two most important ones are potassium and sodium.

A better choice for your taste and health is a purifier with an ion exchange step. This step removes traces of lead and copper replacing them with ions of sodium and potassium. The taste is superior.

The reason that people reporting tasting chlorine in their reverse osmosis reviews is simple. The devices do not remove chlorine. Carbon filtration is necessary to do that.

Costs

If a reverse osmosis water treatment comparison is a review of RO devices available from different companies, you will see that the cost ranges from around 00 to over ,000. The more effective systems cost the most.

If on the other hand, you compare the cost to that of different technologies, you will see that RO always costs the most, but does not always do the best job.

In reverse osmosis reviews, customers often complain about the cost of installation, the cost of maintenance and increased utility bills. Depending on the distributor, installation is sometimes free. So, if you've decided that RO is right for you, shop around for the best deal.

Installation Challenge for Reverse Osmosis

Homeowners cannot install the devices themselves. They require the help of a plumber. If your primary concern is your kitchen faucet, you can purchase a kitchen countertop unit that is very effective. You can install it yourself. The cost is around 5. And it is not RO.

The reason customer reverse osmosis reviews mention increased utility bills is because electricity is needed to power the devices and water consumption is increased due to wastewater created by the units. Neither of these is a factor with other more modern purification choices

Contaminant Removal

Depending on the device, anything larger than 1 micron is removed. That's why chlorine is not removed. Other chemicals, as well, are much smaller than a micron. Some are even gaseous. Synthetic chemicals and gases can only be removed by carbon and other filtering media through a process called adsorption.

Best Water Filter Device

Whenever I do a reverse osmosis water treatment comparison, I always find new reasons to dislike devices with RO. There are better choices.

The best purification devices for the home combine submicron filtration with carbon, multi-media blocks, adsorption and ion exchange. Those steps remove chemicals, prescription drugs, gases, lead, copper, parasitic cysts, herbicides, pesticides and practically anything that you can think of. In my research, I found one company that manufactures a water filter device that removes the above mentioned contaminants.

Reverse Osmosis System Comparison

If you have spent any time researching water purifying solutions online you will know about RO. An RO System is the only home filtration system that can actually clean your tap water from all heavy metals, chemicals and other contaminants. The only other (not always - depending on the brand) solution might be mineral water but it is simply much, much, much more expensive then a such a System installed at your home.

Reverse Osmosis cost effective is proved again and again in any Reverse Osmosis System Comparison you will make. As a real "water purification freak", I have studied this matter for several years now and in this article I will share some of my conclusions. I shall discuss a Reverse Osmosis cost per system and its benefits compared to other water purification solutions.

OSMOSIS

What is RO Filtration?

RO filtration is a water treatment process in which water is forced through a membrane that has very small holes. Clean water passes through and impurities that are too big to pass through the membrane and are left behind and flushed away.

How does a RO System work?

Tap water is passed through a particle filter that removes silt and large particles. Next, an activated carbon filter traps minerals and contaminants. Water enters the RO module under pressure, allowing only clean water to pass through. Treated water is passed through an activated carbon filter and is ready for use.

RO System Benefits are:

o Filters out most heavy metals, chemicals and contaminants, up to 99% free of contaminants.
o Uses no electricity
o Gives you fresh clean water at home - For both drinking and cooking
o Will make you stop carrying those heavy bottles or barrels of water to your home
o Although a single system's Reverse Osmosis cost can range from 0-0 you save about 0 on the first year (which is the most expensive year - after that you only change filters), this means that you return the investment in 6 months!!! Talk about Reverse Osmosis Cost Effective...

An RO System will save you from hazardous water pollutions:

It is a known fact today that tap water which is drawn from underground water is severely contaminated with heavy metals, chemicals and more. All this pollution can cause you Cancer and other horrifying disease. I know it sounds horrible, but it's true. Together with all the other hazardous pollutions which are passed to us by air, food and others, we can harm our body with drinking plain tap water.

Any filter that you might buy today in the market can clean some of the big particles in the water or some of the scale but no methodology other then RO will clean out the heavy metals and the chemicals. This is why it is so important to use a water purifier which really cleans your water.
