Reverse Osmosis Water Filter - The Negative Health Impact

For many years, the reverse osmosis water filter has been the number one choice of water filtration systems around the globe. This was due in part to the fact that these systems were the most widely available and also because it was the only system that many people knew about.

Times are changing however, and so is technology, and the reverse osmosis filter is taking the back burner to other filtration systems that have much more to offer to consumers. With technological advances that have been made, filtration systems have become far more superior than the old fashioned reverse osmosis filter and offer a great many more benefits.

OSMOSIS

The reverse osmosis filter was originally manufactured over 40 years ago to provide mineral free water for the photo processing and printing industries. While these filters are certainly affective at providing mineral free water for these industries, they are not affective at providing water that is fit for consumption.

Water has naturally occurring minerals that our beneficial to our bodies such as calcium, magnesium and potassium. A reverse osmosis water filter removes these organic minerals from the water, ultimately stripping it of it's benefits. Not only does stripping the water of these healthy minerals rob our bodies of them, it can actually cause negative health affects as well.

When a person consumes water that has been stripped of it's natural minerals, it becomes more acidic. Consuming this acid substance causes our bodies to pull minerals from our bones and teeth in order to balance and neutralize the acid. This of course results in unhealthy teeth and bones which can lead to a multitude of disorders.

Additionally, it has been scientifically proven that when our bodily fluids become unbalanced and are more acidic than alkaline, there is an increase in the production of free radicals and our bodies become at a greater risk of cancer. Healthy mineral water helps to maintain a balance in our bodies that will help them to be more successful at fighting off these free radicals and prevent cancer.

Yet another disadvantage of a reverse osmosis water filter is that though it will work to a great degree in removing contaminants from the water, it is not nearly as effective as other methods of water filtration such as carbon block filters, granular carbon filters and multi-media block filters.

A reverse osmosis filter can only remove contaminants that are of a larger molecular structure than that of a water molecule. So while they will work at removing certain toxins that can be found in todays water supply, they are not effective at removing contaminants such as herbicides and pesticides which are made of a smaller molecular structure than water and are commonly found in the water supply.

While the reverse osmosis water filter was certainly a hot commodity in it's heyday, it's time has passed and should be avoided when you are purchasing a home water filtration system. Technology has advanced to the point where we can now purchase water filters that will remove all of the contaminants that are found in todays water supply, while leaving behind the healthy minerals that water naturally contains. These are the type of filters that would be the best investment, and will provide quality drinking water for you and your family.

Rushing to Buy a Countertop Reverse Osmosis Filter? Read This First

One of the things that have always surprised me is the popularity of countertop reverse osmosis units. A lot of people still think that they are the best choice when it comes to water filters - something which is evident from the fact that water filter manufacturers sell hundreds of thousands of countertop RO units every year. As someone who has studied water purification in detail, I have something very important to tell you guys.

osmosis filter

Countertop reverse osmosis units are not the best choice for you. By drinking water that has been purified by reverse (RO) osmosis process, you are putting your health at risk big time. I understand that what I am saying might come as a big surprise to most of you guys, but make sure you read this article fully. By the time you finish reading it, you will understand that what I am saying is right.

OSMOSIS

First of all, let me make something very clear. I have nothing against the companies which sell countertop reverse osmosis units. My problem is not with their water purifiers, but with the purification process itself. So, basically, what I am going to say applies not just to countertop filters, but to any type of water filter that is based on reverse osmosis. Now that I have made it clear, let me tell you why I think reverse osmosis is not the right method to purify tap water.

1. In reverse osmosis, water is passed through a semi permeable membrane which removes contaminants like cysts, dirt, heavy metals, and certain viruses and bacteria. The big problem, however, is that the membrane is not capable of removing any contaminants that is smaller in size than water molecules. As a result, small contaminants like volatile organic compounds pass through the membrane easily.

2. Water contains lots of essential minerals which are very good for your health. An RO unit, however, removes these essential minerals as they are larger in size than water molecules. So, you get de-mineralized distilled water which is only good to be used in car batteries and chemical labs. By drinking this kind of water, you could develop several health problems.

3. You all know what chlorinated water smells and tastes like - awful. Reverse osmosis is not capable of removing chlorine from tap water and, as a result, the filtered water you get from countertop reverse osmosis units smells and tastes just as bad as tap water. Moreover, it is not capable of removing the harmful byproducts of chlorination which can cause serious health problems including cancer.

4. A typical countertop RO unit wastes lots of water. To produce a gallon of pure water, it wastes nearly four gallons of water. This, needless to say, is terribly bad for the environment. Water is a precious commodity and it is meant to be treated like one.

5. Above all, countertop reverse osmosis units cost a lot. You need to spend thousands of dollars on installation alone. After knowing the shortcomings of reverse (RO) osmosis, I am not sure if someone would be willing to spend that kind of money on RO units.

Now, after reading this, you might have a question - is there a better alternative? My answer to you is - yes, there is. You see - there are several water purification methods that are way better than reverse osmosis. The ones that immediately come to mind are active carbon filtration, sub micron filtration, and ion exchange. These methods are capable of removing more than 99% of the contaminants present in tap water, including chlorine. And, most importantly, they retain the essential minerals present in water. So, instead of countertop reverse osmosis filters, you can go for a water filter based on any of these methods or a combination of all three methods. This way, you get to drink clean, tasty water every day.

My take on this issue is very simple - why spend so much money on countertop reverse osmosis water filters when there are much better alternatives available at affordable prices? Read this article thoroughly, ask yourself this question, and make an informed decision today.

Osmosis Fluoride Water Filter

Very few things are as important to you and your health as your drinking water, and one of the best ways to have healthy drinking water is to use a reverse osmosis (RO) fluoride water filter. Reverse osmosis filters move the water through very thin like membranes to eliminate unhealthy particles and make your drinking water extremely safe. I want to look at best osmosis fluoride water filtration devices that Amazon.com offers.

The first is this 5 Stage Reverse Osmosis Water Filter with a storage tank. It can purify 50 gallons of water each day which is generally twice as much as the competition. This filter removes chlorine and heavy metals such as chromium and cadmium. The storage tanks are very useful because it can be filtering your water constantly so that you don't run out. When the storage tank is full, it has an automatic close off valve that stops the filtering process so water is not wasted.

Now I have read that installing this particular reverse osmosis fluoride water filter is not the easiest thing in the world. Unfortunately, the directions are not as good as they could be, so it may take a bit of trial and error before you get it right. But once you get it going, it is one of the best reverse osmosis filters on the market. Plus you can usually find this product at a pretty good discount online. In fact, today I have seen this product at a 40% discount.

Another great reverse osmosis fluoride water filter is this Countertop Reverse Osmosis Water Filter made by Crystal Clear. This is a 3-stage filter that is great for travel or small apartments. It can purify about 2 gallons of water each hour which adds up to about 50 gallons a day. Much like the filter we looked at above, this one filters about twice as much water as you get with most RO water filters. This filter comes with a 3 year warranty on the hardware, and it is recommended that the sediment filter me changed every 6 to 12 months based on usage.

Now this is water filter is perfect if you need it to be portable. In can be hooked up rather easily, and it is actually made to be carried in RVs or campers. Overall, this reverse osmosis fluoride filter is great for the price, and it is very convenient as well.

Once final reverse osmosis fluoride water filter that we will look at is this 4-Stage 100 GPD Portable product. This product has great capacity and is able to purify 100 gallons of water each day! It hooks up directly to your faucet, but notice that it does not have a storage container. What this means is that you need to run this water into a separate container and store it for later use. I especially like this one because it is so light and easy to hook up. We usually run it for a few hours at night while switching out the containers so that each day we have several gallons of water ready for our trip.

Reverse Osmosis Water Filter

When reverse filter systems were first used for residences they were a huge seller. However this was before people knew the effects of drinking water put through a reverse osmosis water filter. Reverse osmosis is not the best way to filter water, certainly it is better than no filter at all, but there are many disadvantages to drinking water from a reverse osmosis water filter.

Reverse liquid filter systems cannot filter anything that is lighter, that is to say smaller molecularly, than water. Many pesticides, bacteria and chlorine are lighter than water and they are left behind in water that has gone through a reverse osmosis water filter. Also, minerals that are essential for our health are stripped away from the water through reverse osmosis. This leaves us with de-mineralized water that is potential harmful to our health because of the pesticides.

OSMOSIS

Another big disadvantage is the waste of water. Reverse and osmosis has been shown to waste about four gallons of water for ever one it produces. Additionally, the water that is wasted and sent back out into the world is not of a natural pH balance and thus not safe for the environment. In addition to the waste, you are wasting time to wait for reverse osmosis treatments. That one gallon to be produced takes between three and four hours to be produced.

Everything that a reverse and filter is supposed to do can be done by another type of filtration and in most cases it is done better. For example, carbon filtration wastes no water, it wastes no time and it does not filter out the minerals from the water. Ultraviolet radiation treatment kills all of the bacteria and other microorganisms from the liquid that reverse and osmosis would miss.
