Reverse Osmosis Water Units - These Systems Have Problems

Reverse osmosis water units are expensive and for most homeowners, there is no need to spend the money. While those that market them may say that reverse osmosis systemes are the best, there are better, more technologically advanced alternatives.

Reverse osmosis water units have been recommended for giardia and cryptosporidium cyst removal. In case you are not familiar with them, cysts cause waterborne illnesses similar to food poisoning. They can cause chronic stomach problems as well. In people with poorly functioning immune systems, they can cause death. Any system that is certified to filter down to one micron will remove cysts. The best ones filter down to a half a micron.

Reverse osmosis systems are sometimes recommended for people that have "hard water" which is a high mineral content. Generally, the mineral is calcium, but iron and other elements can cause problems as well. Water softeners are less expensive than reverse osmosis systems, as is ion exchange. Either of those can be targeted to address specific minerals and other elements without completely de-mineralizing. Drinking de-mineralized water on a regular basis is not good for your health.

Reverse osmosis water units are sometimes recommended for lead reduction. Ion exchange systems trap lead, copper, and other metallic ions and replace them with sodium or potassium. Those electrolytes help to maintain the body's homeostasis or hydration.

In most homes, the biggest problems are chemical contaminants, including chlorine and chorine byproducts known as THMs. In some areas, VOCs, such as perchlorate, are problems. Traces of pesticides, herbicides, and prescription drugs have been found coming in to many homes and offices.

Reverse osmosis systems will not remove those chemicals at all. They are smaller than your water's molecules. Anything that would filter them out would not allow water to pass through either. Chemicals can only be trapped on the surface of carbon granules and special resins. The process is called adsorption.

The quality of adsorptive purifiers varies. It's best to read product performance data before you buy one. The manufacturer should list the impurities that are reduced and the extent of reduction. Most reverse osmosis water units don't include the extent of reduction, because they don't have the testing done. Manufacturers can have Underwriter's and other independent laboratories conduct testing, but they must pay for it. Many companies don't want to go to the expense.

If your problem is fluoride, reverse osmosis systems are mostly ineffective. The highest fluoride reduction is provided by granulated aluminum. But, granular carbon is somewhat effective as well.

If you have a private well, then you should have regular testing conducted to determine the impurities that are present. Even after you install a system, you should have annual testing conducted to create a record of quality. There are industrial and natural activities that can affect that quality.

If you have access to a public waterline, you don't need reverse osmosis water units. You need multi-stage selective filtration, which is far less expensive.

Reverse osmosis systems for in-home use are not the right choice for most people. Originally, the reverse osmosis system was designed for large scale operations. Your public water treatment facility is probably using some form of the system.

The problem is that the water treatment facilities are just unable to keep up with the variety of pollutants that have entered the ground water over the years. They have done a good job, in that we don't see outbreaks of cholera or dysentery in this country, but it is long-term health risks and chronic health problems that are our major concerns, now.

The only way to be completely safe is to install good filters within our homes, but some companies are taking advantage of our need to take care of ourselves. They advertise reverse osmosis systems as the answers to all of our problems. They are not being completely honest.

As mentioned above, the reverse osmosis system is often used by water treatment facilities, but it is also used in industrial settings where there is a need for de-mineralized water. Film development, for example, requires de-mineralized water.

Simply put, reverse osmosis systems work by forcing water at high pressure through a porous membrane. Much of the water is lost, becomes waste water. Sometimes, it is recycled back into the system. Sometimes, it goes back to the source, whether that is a river or a sewer.

Depending on the type of reverse osmosis system that is used and the size of the pores in the membrane, anywhere from three to five gallons of water is wasted for every one gallon that is cleaned. In the case of making river water acceptable for human consumption, that's okay, but if you are paying a utility bill based on your water consumption, then it's not okay.

Not only are reverse osmosis systems expensive, they increase a person's water bill. They are difficult to install, typically requiring a plumber's help. So, you have to pay for the reverse osmosis system, pay the plumber and your monthly water bill goes up.

Also, drinking de-mineralized water is not healthy. The trace minerals found naturally in ground water are good for your health. Depending on where you live, your water may be your best source of potassium or other minerals.

Studies have shown that drinking de-mineralized water on a regular basis is bad for the digestive system and sometimes results in mineral deficiencies. Installing reverse osmosis systems in the home could cause similar health problems for you and your loved ones.

There are good choices for in-home water filters. Activated carbon is an absolute necessity if you want good tasting, chlorine free water. Micron filters block particles that would pass right through a reverse osmosis system membrane.

So, buy a good system, but skip the reverse osmosis systems. They waste water and for most people they are a waste of money.

Reverse Osmosis Water Filters Problems and Solutions

Reverse osmosis water filters offers many benefits including health, economic, and environmental benefits. They are one of the top sellers in water filtration. While they do provide benefits, there are two notable problems with the filters.

Osmosis is where a solution that is weak is pushed through a semi-permeable membrane to a solution with greater concentration. Reverse osmosis is the process where osmosis is begun, stopped, and finally reversed. The end result is that contaminants are trapped on one side of the membrane while pure water is on the other side of the membrane.

A drawback of these filters concerns the process itself. Another drawback is that reverse osmosis is an extremely slow process. If a more immediate process is necessary, this filter system may not be an option. There is no real solution to this problem with the exception maybe of the improvement of current technology.

Economic benefits includes the reduction of bottled water expense. In the long run, the initial expense of the filter system will well be worth it as the cost per gallon is far less than bottled water. Health benefits include disease prevention, reduction or elimination of learning disabilities in children and birth defects. Skin and hair will become softer and healthier. Environmental benefits include a lesser amount of plastic being produced. There is also a great reduction of the amount of plastic bottles filling our landfills.

Reverse osmosis water filters are effective in purifying water supplies. They do remove some important minerals and these can be gotten from diet or supplements. They are very popular sellers in the industry.
