Residential Reverse Osmosis Systems Are Great - NOT

Who needs residential reverse osmosis systems? That's a good question. So, far, I'm having trouble finding the answer.

Most of the new reverse osmosis systems residential units were designed for use on publicly treated water. But, people with publicly treated water don't need to use reverse osmosis. There is simply no reason for it.

I know that it can be confusing, because there's a lot of different information and varying opinions. But, if you read the Environmental Protection Agency's recommendations, you will see that residential reverse osmosis systems are only suggested as one option for cyst removal.

Cysts are microscopic organisms that cause diarrhea, stomach cramping, vomiting, loss of appetite and other unpleasant symptoms. A strong person may only be sick for a few days, but a person with a weakened immune system or a small child can die from the infection.

The EPA states that cysts may be present in any publicly treated supply and even in bottled waters. Cysts may be ingested by drinking, brushing teeth or washing fresh fruits and vegetables with contaminated water.

The EPA recommends that "at-risk" individuals should use a residential RO system unit OR a purifier that includes submicron particle filtration. Submicron particle filtration costs a lot less than reverse osmosis systems residential units and they are just as effective.

For chlorine removal, the EPA recommends activated carbon. Now, some residential reverse osmosis systems include a carbon granule step, but many do not. It is typically an "additional option." So, if you do decide to use RO, you need to make sure that you add the step.

There are a number of contaminants that the EPA is not particularly concerned with, primarily, because they don't cause "immediate" illness. If you want to protect your long term health, however, you should be concerned about those contaminants.

Consider the heavy metal lead, for example. The EPA has created a "federal action level" for lead content, which simply means that if a facility determines that the levels have risen above the action level, steps must be taken to correct the problem.

Reverse osmosis systems residential products only reduce lead to the federal action level, but there is really no safe level for lead consumption. The metal builds up in the body overtime, causing heart disease, high blood pressure, osteoporosis and other long term health problems. Not to mention the affect that it has on the human brain.

Instead of choosing residential reverse osmosis systems for lead reduction, you should choose ion exchange. Home purifiers that include ion exchange, submicron filtration and carbon blocks will reduce all of the contaminants mentioned here by at least 99%.

There are other reasons to avoid reverse osmosis systems. The units break down easily and require extensive maintenance. They create gallons of wastewater when functioning properly and provide no protection when they are dysfunctional.

The cheaper residential reverse osmosis systems are simply not a worthwhile investment. Multi-stage, selective filtration is the right answer for most of us. That's what you need to look for.

The Disadvantages of Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Systems

By now, most of us have probably heard that we should all be drinking a lot of water to maintain our bodily systems and stay healthy, and by concerns of the true quality of bottled water, we are heeding the call.

In today's society, most of us are becoming more concerned about, and aware of, ways to improve our overall health, and water is definitely right up there at the top of the list of concerns.

Not only should we be concerned about how much water we are ingesting, however. We should also be concerned about the quality of that water. As such, may of us are choosing to learn more about water purification and filtering to ensure that the water we drink, cook with, and bathe in is pure and clean.

There are many systems out there, one of which is the reverse osmosis type, which claims to be the best on the market, but there are distinct disadvantages of reverse osmosis (also referred to as ro).

If you are like most of us, cost is a consideration for just about everything, and water purification is no exception. ro systems are incredibly expensive. They are priced in the thousands of dollars, which is one of the biggest disadvantages for most people. They are simply not affordable.

Okay, let's assume that price does not really matter, and tend to the question: Does it make water safe to drink? Well, despite the overwhelming popularity of these systems and the claims made by manufacturers, the answer to that question is no, not really.

These systems are really designed to remove anything that is heavier than the water itself. What is heavier than water? Dirt. So, it's great at removing dirt from the water. The problem is, very few people have water with dirt in it coming out of their kitchen faucets, so what good is that? For most people, the ability to remove sand or dirt is not at all useful.

What else is heavier than water? Lots of minerals are heavier than water. Wait a minute! Minerals? Aren't we supposed to be getting minerals? Yes, our bodies need minerals; in fact, most of us take a daily vitamin and mineral supplement. We actually pay money to add minerals into our diets, and reverse osmosis manufacturers would have us pay thousands of dollars to remove minerals from the water we drink? That defies logic.

What about chlorine, that chemical that bleaches out our swimsuits when we swim in the pool and leaves our water tasting nasty and smelling worse? Does reverse osmosis eliminate chlorine? Well, to be sure, our municipal water treatment plants have been using chlorine for decades, and chlorine is known to kill bacteria; however, chlorine is not natural and not pleasant to drink.

Unfortunately, chlorine remains behind, which is another of the disadvantages of reverse osmosis water systems. Overall, ro systems are too expensive and too ineffective.

Getting cleaner, purer, safer water into our bodies is a top priority and, with a little research, there are better choices for you and your family.

Residential Reverse Osmosis Systems Exposed

Residential reverse osmosis systems were all the rage at one time, but there popularity has waned over the years. Industries are successful with reverse osmosis systems residential homes, however, are not so successful.

Companies that sell reverse osmosis systems claim that they are the latest technology. They have actually been in use for over 50 years. They are a common component of public filtration plants. They are the only choice for desalination facilities. But, in they are only one step in the process. In other words, additional steps are needed to make the water safe and drinkable.

In most cases, reverse osmosis systems residential customers are buying something that they do not need. Some wells that are brackish may require RO, but once again, it alone does not make it safe to drink.

There are many contaminants that reverse type systems will not remove. Most of them are chemicals, but bacterial organisms pass through the membranes, as well. For well-water, a disinfection process is still required, typically involving the use of chlorine. Then a carbon filter must be used to remove the chlorine and another type must be used to remove by-products of chlorination called THMs.

Bacterial removal protects your immediate health. Chemicals, chlorine and THMs are threats to your future health. Many of them are known to cause cancer, either in animals or humans or both. Continuous exposure throughout one's life increases the risk of cancer by several hundred times, according to scientific research.

Osmosis systems will neither protect your immediate or your future health. But, one of the biggest reasons for their decrease in popularity is the fact that they de-mineralize. Several books have been published about the health giving qualities of pure water, but all of them mention that drinking distilled or de-mineralized is bad for your digestion and can lead to mineral deficiencies, over time.

Industries that need demineralization rely on reverse osmosis systems residential units, on the other hand, are now offering to put the minerals back in, a process that was developed for use in desalination plants. Before, being sent to homes, it is re-mineralized.

Residential reverse osmosis systems are calling this "revitalization". I suppose it works in theory, but still seems illogical. Why would you pay extra for a system that does something you do not want and then "undoes" it?

The point is that there are some situations that benefit from reverse osmosis systems residential settings, however, are not on the list. Unless you require desalination, you can get a more effective, less expensive system for your home. The latest technology includes multi-media block, carbon filtration, micron removal and ion exchange. The result is safe, clean, perfectly balanced pH level and mineral content.

Micron removal blocks microscopic bacterial cysts and spores. Carbon filtration, as mentioned above removes chlorine and improves taste and smell. Multi-media blocks trap any chemical contaminants. Ion exchange balances, but does not destroy mineral content. Residential reverse osmosis systems start at ,000 and I haven't even covered all of the disadvantages. Home Reverse Osmosis Systems - Are They Really Effective?

It's unbelievable how much misinformation is out there when it comes to water filters. So many people are led to believe that a home Reverse Osmosis system is exactly what they need to get pure, safe drinking water. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Fact is, a home reverse osmosis system can give your semi-pure water at best. Just think about the kinds of contaminants present in our tap water today. It's loaded with the normal dirt and grime, plus there are chemicals like chlorine and fluoride. Even pharmaceutical drugs can be found in this water.

Add to this the heavy metals like lead and asbestos that get mixed in the water in the water supply system, and you get a dangerous mix of substances that can harm your health permanently.

Now, let's see what an RO system can do about these contaminants. The way these systems work is - there is a semi permeable membrane inside the filter through which water is forced to pass. The pores of the membrane do not allow contaminants to pass through. The only caveat is - the molecular size of the impurity should be greater than that of water.

So, theoretically, only water passes through this membrane and all contaminants are left behind.

The problem is - the molecular size of chemicals like chlorine or prescription drugs is smaller than that of water. So they also pass through undetected along with the water.

The other problem is of de-mineralization. Water in its natural state contains some minerals like calcium and magnesium which play an important role in our well being.

The molecules of these metals are big in size and are blocked by the membrane in your RO filter. Drinking this de-mineralized water can lead to health problems due to mineral deficiency in the long run.

Some home reverse osmosis systems try to remedy this by adding a separate unit to add minerals in the water after filtering, and then jack up the costs of the filter accordingly. It doesn't really make sense to first remove minerals from the water and then later add them - and that too at a higher cost!

Your best option is to use a filter that uses the advanced techniques of sub micron filtration, ion exchange, and carbon filtration. Together, these techniques remove the dirt, chemicals and heavy metals and give you really pure water - without de-mineralizing it.

So there you have it. A home reverse osmosis filter may not be the ideal choice for your health. Do some research and find out a better filter now.

Residential systems are touted for their ability to reduce lead to the federal action level. If the lead in your water supply exceeds the federal action level, then you should complain to your community's public utility. It is the traces of lead that fall below the federal action level that are believed to cause chronic health problems such as digestive issues, memory loss and dementia in older people or those with weaker immune systems. It's better for their health and the water taste fresher. In areas where people are the healthiest, the water has naturally balanced trace minerals including potassium, calcium, sodium and others.

Home Reverse Osmosis Systems

When deciding on purchasing any home reverse osmosis systems, be sure you know what type of membrane you will need. Different water treatment chemicals will affect the membrane differently. If you have city water, call your water department to find out, if you have a well, have your water tested. Your county Health Department should be able to either do this, or direct you to where it can be done. Once you have the results, it's time to decide on a solution. Knowing what is in the water coming to your home will give you a better idea of the options available for removing them.

The reverse osmosis system consists of a prefilter to remove silt and sediment, then the water is forced through a membrane that removes microscopic impurities. The water is then filtered again, and in some cases the use of ultra violet is employed to kill bacteria, then the water is filtered yet again. If your water pressure isn't sufficient to force it through the membrane effectively, a booster pump will be needed. The impurities, along with untreated water, are then flushed out the waste water pipe.

This can also be redirected to water landscaping and plants so no water gets wasted. This process is, to date, the preferred method of removing trace amounts of medications, both prescription and over the counter, that are appearing with more frequency in our water treatment facilities. Systems and Process
Feed water to the system is from bore-well with raw water TDS of about 2451 PPM. The system design was based on high rejection TFC spiral wound membranes. The Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis system was selected from our RO-500 Series, model number BW-320K-6780-3. The Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis (BWRO) unit consists of 5-micron cartridge filters to reduce feed water Silt Density Index (SDI) and to limit the SS to 5-micron size and advanced PLC control panel with touch panel screen. Pre-treatment and post-treatment includes the following:

Performance

Introduction
In the Middle East, fresh water is becoming more and more difficult and expensive to obtain. As a result countries are investing in alternatives in water pufication such as reverse osmosis and desalination. In May 2007, Pure Aqua successfully supplied a water treatment package consisting of a Reverse Osmosis System to produce 200 gpm of product from 250 gpm feed, antiscalant chemical dosing, prechlorination chemical dosing, acid injection dosing, and dechlorination dosing systems.

Systems and Process
Feed water to the system is processed water with raw water TDS of about 1,500 PPM. The system design was based on high rejection TFC spiral wound low fouling membranes. The Reverse Osmosis system was selected from our RO-500 Series, model number BW-360K-8680-3. It produces 200 gpm of drinking water with TDS less than 100 mg/L. The Reverse Osmosis unit consists of 5-micron cartridge filters to reduce feed water Silt Density Index (SDI) and to limit the SS to 5-micron size. TFC spiral wound membranes have a recovery rate of 80% with an advanced microprocessor control panel and cleaning system.

Performance
From a feed TDS of about 1,500 mg/L at temperature range of 27°C, the system produces 200gpm of high quality water at less than 100 ppm. The water produced will be used in the water park area of the Sports Center in boating areas, pools and water slides.

Introduction
The Industrial Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis Unit was manufactured and supplied by Pure Aqua in January 2008 for a major water treatment company in Dubai. The BWRO Unit is capacity of 90,000GPD product water.

Systems and Process
Feed water to the system is processed water with raw water TDS of about 2450 PPM. The system design was based on high rejection TFC spiral wound low fouling membranes. The Reverse Osmosis Unit was selected from our RO-400 Series, model number BW-87K-2680. It produces 63 gpm of drinking water with TDS less than 50mg/L. The BWRO Unit consists of 8"x40" Hydranautics ESPA2 membrane elements, Codeline 8" diameter FRP side ported pressure vessels, controlled by microprocessor with digital TDS read out, hi/low tank level switches, hi/low pressure switches, SS multistage pump and inlet shut off valve.

Performance
From a feed TDS of about 2,450mg/L at temperature range of 25 °C, the system produces 90,000gpd of high quality water at less than 50ppm. Since the time of its start-up in January 2008, the plant has been running smoothly with minimal troubleshooting.

The Truth About Reverse Osmosis Systems

The dictionary definition of osmosis is a "slow change in concentration: the diffusion of a solvent through a semipermeable membrane from a dilute to a more concentrated solution."
The definition of Reverse Osmosis, also known as RO, is "the production of pure liquids: a process of purifying water or other liquids such as fruit juices by passing them through a semipermeable membrane that filters out unwanted substances".
